Rachel Pineda is from Terryville, Connecticut, but hails from Mercedes, Texas. While she’s been living away for 13 years, working from home and taking care of her 18-month-old son, Pineda misses a lot about the Lone Star State.

“I miss the weather, I miss the food, I miss the people,” she says.

Pineda says Texans have a lot to be proud of.

“We can cook, we can dance, we can laugh,” she says. “We can have a good time, we work hard.”

Anytime she has the opportunity to come back for a visit, she takes it. With a tear in her eye, she told the Standard that it’s the simple moments she misses most.

“Sometimes I just have to sit in my grandma’s yard and listen to the birds,” she says. “Sit under a mesquite tree and the sky and just…smell the air because it’s so beautiful….that’s how much I love Texas.”
