All He Needs is the Sound of a Souped-Up Motor

Behind the wheel of his decked-out ’72 Chevrolet El Camino, Lubbock’s Michael Gierhartz has led a high-speed life on the Idalou racetrack.

“I started out back in the ‘70s,” Gierhartz says. “My older sister’s boyfriend had a ‘56 Chevy that he raced, so that got me started and it never ended.”

He may have hung up his hat as a racer, but Gierhartz says he won’t be abandoning his ride just yet. He’ll continue to show off his prized possession in car shows.

“I’ve always equated starting a new motor is like watching a baby being born. Ya’ know, it’s just like, awesome. “
