Don’t Believe the Hype: 3 Overrated Gadgets

The Digital Savant tells us what expensive gadgets to skip, including curved TVs and so-called “smart home” devices.

Last week we talked about the under-appreciated and much unloved bits of technology. But it got us thinking: what about the most overrated? Those gadgets that never live up to the hype or, perhaps, the hefty price tag.

Digital savant Omar Gallaga, of the Austin American-Statesman’s 512 Tech, says “smart homes” comes up with reference to light bulbs, heaters, garage doors, and more. But people aren’t investing in getting their homes wired for these products.

“(The concept) is kind of at a crossroads right now,” he says. “…What a lot of it amounts to is that it really hasn’t delivered. There’s still just a lot of incompatible products and products that don’t do exactly what they’re supposed to do all the time.”
