Sandra Bland was driving through Waller County on July 10, 2015, and was pulled over by a DPS Trooper for making a lane change without properly signaling. Three days later she was found dead in her Waller County Jail cell. Her death was ruled a suicide.

Bland’s arrest was captured on video and ignited national protests. Today the calls for reform and systemic changes continue. And in the upcoming Texas legislature, the Sandra Bland Act will be introduced.

State Rep. Garnet Coleman, Houston Democrat and chair of the House County Affairs Committee, is behind the bill. Coleman spoke with Texas Public Radio’s The Source about the act.
