In 2008, Bill White was mayor of Houston. He saw his city, and Texas as a whole, overcome adversity during a natural disaster. Hurricane Ike damaged much of Houston.

“What was considered the worst wind scenario – Hurricane Ike. It took us a few weeks to come back…but we did,” White says. “We’ll come back from this [Harvey] as well.”

White was one of millions of people who experienced flooding during Harvey. He’s optimistic about Houston’s ability to recover from the storm, and he hopes more people – from Texas and other states – will be encouraged to take action by coming together to help Houston.

“If your losses have been limited or zero, then find somebody you can help,” he says. “You’ll get back a lot more than you give.”
