Theodosia Shayo was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, although her family is from the Kilimanjaro region. She went to law school in Tanzania – the first in her family to attend college. She moved to Texas in 2010 after deciding to marry an American she originally met online. They now in Austin with their two daughters.

Theo says she enjoys meeting with other Africans and people from different nations. She founded a group called the International Multicultural Community that hosts social gatherings in Austin.

Theo also owns and designs an African-inspired clothing line called Shavanthe. She says she has received an enthusiastic response from Texans who like trying out new fashions. She plans to expand Shavanthe by providing disadvantaged women in Tanzania with sewing machines and expertise so they can earn money by making clothes.
