Never a dull moment around the Lone Star State – that’s why we take this opportunity every Friday to digest the week in Texas politics. Joining the Standard today is Jim Malewitz, reporter at the Texas Tribune.

Let’s start with the mid-May runoff race for Railroad Commission: the GOP side is getting heated for the commission’s open seat.

“That’s kind of what happens when you have two candidates who don’t differ a whole lot on the policy – a couple of Republicans who enjoy bashing the EPA and talk about embracing the oil and gas industry,” he said.

Some of Wayne Christian’s supporters are diving deep into Gates’s past to dig up a never-convicted child abuse case from 2000.

What you’ll hear in this segment:

– What’s behind former House Speaker John Boehner calling Cruz “Lucifer in the flesh”

– Another “bathroom bill” is in the works for next session
