The Dallas Wings and San Antonio Stars are two Women’s National Basketball Association teams currently in play in Texas, but whatever happened to the Houston Comets?
The Comets, one of the league’s most successful franchises, won the WNBA’s first four championships. Because of problems with finances, however, the team disbanded in 2008. With a trend of folding and relocating teams, what is the state of the WNBA?
Fran Harris, former WNBA player and play-by-play announcer, talks to the Standard about how the league has progressed in the past 20 years.
So what’s going right in the WNBA?
“I think we have to take a step back and applaud the fact that this little startup that everyone thought was the baby of the NBA has a life of its own now,” Harris says.
Growing talent and more interest from investors, Harris says, makes the WNBA a more “viable investment opportunity.”
“When I came out of high school, there had been many failed attempts at professional women’s basketball in this country, and so there was really nothing for my contemporaries and I to aspire to. So I think from that standpoint, it is a great thing that the WNBA is there,” she says.
