Matthew Detrick’s childhood fascination with space exploration took him to new heights as a musician, rather than as an astronaut. He’s the artistic director and founder of the Apollo Chamber Players, an ensemble at Rice University.

Detrick says that the group’s desire to blend new and old styles is inspired by the Apollo space mission.

As their popularity rises, the Apollo Chamber Players are on a special mission of their own.

“We brainstormed and came up with this crazy, ambitious idea,” says Detrick, “of commissioning 20 new folk music or multicultural commissions by the end of the decade, called 20×2020.”
