Legal troubles ensnaring the state’s top lawman have lingered for the better part of two years now.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been fighting charges of securities fraud since July 2015. And now, Paxton is under new scrutiny: Kaufman County District Attorney Erleigh Wiley confirmed yesterday that she is investigating the attorney general for bribery.

Lauren McGaughy has been following Paxton’s legal saga for the Dallas Morning News. The latest investigation into Paxton arises from a $100,000 gift he received from a CEO whose company was under investigation by the state for fraud – an investigation that was settled a year after the six-figure gift to Paxton.

McGaughy says the Kaufman County district attorney is “looking into whether there was a conflict of interest there, how involved the Attorney General was in the settlement … and probably a lot more. That’s what we know at this time.”
