The Standard’s news roundup gives you a quick hit of interesting, sometimes irreverent, and breaking news stories from all over the state.

Plug those headphones in: it’s time for another edition of our Thursday music series Cut In. Dallas writer Lyndsay Knecht brings us the artistic evolution of Leanne Macomber.

Macomber wasn’t born in Denton, but it was the birthplace of her musical career. She was also the original keyboardist for the band, Neon Indian, which was briefly based in Austin before relocating to New York. Macomber’s latest song is for one of her side projects – The Girdles. The song is called, “Hard.” Knecht says the song speaks to, “desire, regret, and the sense that that one feeds the other – something Leanne Macomber gets right every time.”

And: Do you feel like you’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places? If so, Houston-based Rose Matchmaking wants you to try looking in one very specific place: an elevator. Tonight at a hotel in Houston, they’ll be hosting a speed dating event for 12 singles and hopefully none of them are claustrophobic. The pairs will spend about 1-minute in the elevator before debriefing with Matchmaker Assistant George Ochoa.

If the idea sounds a little wacky to you – that’s the point. The company’s event coordinator Renee Edd was brainstorming “out-of-the-box” locations for dates and came up with one that places singles in a glass box, essentially. “I think it gives you an automatic ice breaker because you’re like ‘Wow, look at us we’re in an elevator’ – so you’re not at a loss for words,” Edd says. The idea for the event also came in part, from the Aerosmith song, “Love in An Elevator.” Hopefully, the participants get to live up, while they’re going down tonight – to borrow a line from Steven Tyler.
