Texas Monthly has defined what Texas is for those who live in the state and out of it. The venerable publication is now under new ownership. Paul Hobby, who runs the Houston-based private equity firm Genesis Park, will take charge of the state magazine.

“Anytime someone buys something they ought to have new ideas,” Hobby says. “We will expand the events business. We will provide the full suite of interactive digital products.”

Hobby aims to redefine the brand of Texas Monthly, to make the magazine “relentlessly relevant.” In order to do so, he says the magazine will not focus on breaking news, but rather stick to long-form journalism such as framing issues and connecting dots.

“I’m going to be very hands on, particularly at the outset,” Hobby says. “There’s nothing wrong with the magazine – it just needs a new freshness.”
