Have you ever had your house or apartment burglarized, or your bike stolen? Or maybe you’re just worried about walking home late at night? As is so often the case these days, there’s an app – or several – for that.

Digital savant Omar Gallaga of the Austin American-Statesman’s 512 Tech says even home security systems are using app-based technology that gives you the ability to monitor your own living space.

“The one that I think has really broken out in the past year or two is the Ring Doorbell,” Gallaga says. The Ring puts a camera at your front door, and allows you to see who’s there using a smartphone. The device also detects motion and can record what it sees for later review. Amazon recently purchased Ring.
