It’s time to talk about the week that was in Texas politics. Ayan Mittra, managing editor of the Texas Tribune stopped by the Standard today to talk about some good news in a somewhat tumultuous year: Texas broke the record Thursday with its voter registration numbers.

“The Secretary of State’s office announced this week that Texas has 15 million registered voters,” Mittra says. “It’s a great number, it sounds great but turnout is a lot different than registration so that number has been a little but more centered [around 40 percent] so we’ll see what happens on Election Day.”

Mittra says that one of the big drivers this year to get Texans registered is, of course, the presidential election, but it all comes down to actual turnout at the polls.

“Obviously, this is a record but it’s one thing to sign up to register to vote and then it’s another thing to brave those lines and vote,” he says.
