Three months ago, Kym Martin returned to her native Australia after 12 years in Texas. Among other things, she says she misses good Mexican food. And she says that after a total of 17 years in the United States, she’s not sure where home really is.
“I don’t think I’ll ever feel 100 percent fully at home anywhere ever again. I have dear, dear friends all over the world, which I think is just fantastic,” Martin says.
As 2018 approaches, Australians are in the midst of summer: their New Year’s celebrations feature a few traditions Americans might find surprising. Or at least, unfamiliar.
“It was over 100 degrees yesterday,” Martin says. “We’re planning some cold seafood, fresh prawns, cold ham, salads, things like that. And after lunch, we’ll probably be doing the Australian tradition of heading down the beach for a swim.”
If Martin is ever really homesick for this part of the world, she might visit a namesake town down under. She says her parents discovered the town of Texas, Australia as they traveled the country. No word on the availability of enchiladas or tamales in that Texas.
