Despite the fact the Trump administration has rescinded President Barrack Obama’s order that local school districts allow students to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity, Texas legislators are moving ahead with Senate Bill 6, also known as the “bathroom bill.” The legislation would force school districts to require students to use a bathroom associated with the gender on their birth certificate. Despite carving out exceptions that would allow businesses and sports venues to accommodate transgender patrons, business leaders still oppose SB6. “They think it gives the state a black eye.” says Texas Tribune editor-in-chief Emily Ramshaw.

Outspoken Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller drew attention on a trip to the border this week for uncharacteristic comments that seemed at odds with President Donald Trump’s stated polices toward Mexico and immigrants. Miller said the U.S. should involve Mexico in plans to build a border wall, and that the flow of immigration to the U.S. should not be cut so drastically. Ramshaw thinks Miller’s conciliation might have to do with his audience. “He was down on the border meeting with Mexicans about these specific topics…and I think…you choose you words a little more carefully.” she says.

Members of the U.S. House are home in Texas, and getting a lot of flack for not holding town hall meetings with constituents. While Republican lawmakers are hearing loud protests from citizens who don’t like President Trump, the Republican voters who sent them to Washington have no such complaints. “These town halls are not actually that common during Congressional recesses.” says Ramshaw.
