It’s time to talk about the week that was in Texas politics. Emily Ramshaw, editor-in-chief of the Texas Tribune, stopped by the Standard today to talk about what’s been going on across the state.

Sen. Ted Cruz sat down to talk with Evan Smith, CEO of the Texas Tribune last weekend to discuss his endorsement of Donald Trump, after making a point not to endorse him during the Republican National Convention in July.

“Ted Cruz basically said that ‘Well, despite those nasty things Donald Trump said about my wife and about my father, the party is more important. All is forgiven, and I’m endorsing Donald Trump, and also willing to help him campaign,'” Ramshaw says.

A big factor in his decision: Supreme Court nominees. Cruz said he had “assurances from Trump” that he would name a certain number of people that Cruz respected for the open spot.

“Although that’s a pretty small commitment for Donald Trump to have to make to get Cruz to really change course on this,” she says. “I think a lot of people were thinking Ted Cruz had taken a really principled stand on this by not endorsing Trump – and now that sort of goes out the window.”
