In Dime Box, Texas a local spot called Jake’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que has served up some controversy. Jake used to sell his barbecue out of a convenience store known as Barefootz – until he decided to open his own shop just down the street. In a town where barbecue tradition runs deep, the owner of Barefootz started serving up his own in Jake’s absence.

Daniel Vaughn, Texas Monthly’s barbecue editor, wanted to know if the town is big enough for the two of them.

“The big lesson here is that you can find barbecue pretty much anywhere in places that are completely unexpected in Texas,” says Vaughn, “and there’s still so many of these small town places out there that I’ve never heard of.”
