Nothing in life is certain except for death and taxes, the 300 year old saying goes. That’s true even in Texas, which has some of the lowest taxes in the country. People here pay about 7.5 percent of their incomes on taxes, on average, according to the Tax Foundation, a non-profit research group based in Washington, D.C.. That’s the fourth lowest in the country.

But, there is a flip side to that. Texas also has some of the highest residential property taxes in the nation. And now some public officials are saying, the system is not only unfair, but it’s unconstitutional as well.

Austin’s mayor, Steve Adler, joins the Standard to talk about the lawsuit.
