This Texan Spent a Summer in the Clouds at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab

“It’s pretty neat how everybody … can wander around and see things that are going on.”

Tommy Winning, a Ph.D student at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, spent his summer interning at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“Something that I randomly picked and liked went from a Masters degree … to working on a Ph.D, to an internship here,” he says.

Winning looks at data from satellites that have been in orbit since 2006 to obtain measurements about the lowest levels in the atmosphere.

“Especially when you get into something that’s a four or five year process, you tend to kind of start spinning your wheels at some point,” he says. “There are so many different directions to go with the subject I’ve been working on, so it’s actually been refreshing.”
