Typewriter Rodeo: Cleaning Out Your Backpack

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

School is over for most Texas kids. It’s time to take stock of the year past. One way to do that is with a good cleaning and disinfection of that ubiquitous part of the school uniform – the faithful backpack.

CLEANING OUT YOUR BACKPACK

school is out

it’s summer time!

but before you get too excited

please find

the haz mat gear

please glove up

because the backpack

needs to be

cleaned out

oh lord

was that a sandwich

where is your mask

could that have been a strawberry

or is just a liquefied mass

or maybe

a former carrot?

and hey look

a field trip

from september the 5th

don’t forget walking shoes

oh you kids

get over here

and put on YOUR gloves

since school is out

this is no longer my job

clean this thing out

throw away all slime

hose your bag down

hang it on the line

give the back pack a break

air it out with cheer

it’ll be so happy not to see you

until next school year
