Typewriter Rodeo: Contested Convention

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

All the political hubbub around picking the 2016 electoral candidates at statewide conventions, like the one happening in San Antonio next week, is what inspired Typewriter Rodeo’s David Fruchter to write this week’s poem.

Contested Convention

the race has gotten hot

the big two just won’t give up

the main dog of the party

and the snarling little pup

insults fly, and votes are counted

or are they, some would ask

exit polls suspiciously

take balloting to task

but when it comes down to it

it’s not the people who’ll decide

but old men in their meeting rooms

where so many movements died

populism’s well and good

when kept under control

or, as some say, under the thumb

of those who heed no poll…
