Typewriter Rodeo: Enchanted Rock

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on the news.

Climbing Enchanted Rock, a giant granite batholith just north of Fredericksburg, is one of the quintessential Texas experiences. That was the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s Jodi Egerton as she wrote this week’s poem.

Enchanted Rock

So, what I heard was “Enchanted”

But I must have missed “Rock”

And here I am

climbing

up to

the top

Of this wide mighty bald dome

Of craggy slick rock

And my feet hurt

And my calves are screaming

And I might never see my hamstrings again

But

Oh.

The sun is starting to set

And the sky purples out at me

reds and oranges

Silky dusk

We’re here

On the rock

And it’s humming beneath us

enchanted
