Typewriter Rodeo: Government Shutdown

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The days of the federal government’s partial shutdown continue to mount, affecting federal workers, travelers, tourists and everyone else, too.

Government Shutdown

How many days

Or weeks

Will the impasse

Last?

Will the wall

Wall us in?

Keep us divided

Into separate non-speaking groups

Just like one half wants to do

  At the border?

Or will we find a way

To bridge that divide

To get the parks back open

To get the TSA in full force

To get all the take-for-granteds

On track?

Well

Either we will

  Or this wall

Will collapse

Us.

And I guess the one good thing

From that government rubble

Is that then

We won’t

Have to pay

Taxes.
