Typewriter Rodeo: Monarchs

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

One of the prettiest moments of the year in Texas? The Monarch migration. That was the inspiration for Typewriter Rodeo’s Kari Anne Roy as she wrote this week’s poem.

Monarchs

sitting in your office

sitting on your porch

sitting in traffic

and there they go

is it confetti?

leaves on the wind?

or are your eyes really seeing

what you think they’re seeing?

monarchs!

monarchs!

butterflies everywhere

bursts of them across the blue sky

day time fireworks

as they make their way home

a migration of color

of beauty

of such a surprising delight

that even the toughest monday

suddenly has a flash of light
