There’s an expectation in the question, “What are you doing for New Year’s Eve?” You could embrace the party, or the countdown. Or make your own kind of celebration.

New Year’s Eve

Are you a sleeper

or a drinker?

Are you a cheer-er

or a cry-er?

Are you a movie watcher

or a ball-drop-countdown-er?

Or are you

none of the above?

Maybe you’re in the mountains,

stargazing in the crisp air,

or maybe you’ve run to the beach

to breathe, just breathe

for the first time all year,

Maybe you’re surrounded by friends

or on a walk

with your dog

alone

in the shadows

watching your breath cloud

the window

of a closed store

you’d never shop at,

Maybe you’re none of these things

or a little of all them,

your New Year ringing in

celebrating every kind

of human
