Typewriter Rodeo: Survival Of The Weirdest (For My Cats, And Yours)

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

The feline mind is a mystery, even to those who choose to have cats around. But you have to admit – it’s never dull.

Survival of the Weirdest (for my cats, and yours)

i find myself mystified

considering how some evolutionary path

could lead

to apparent dignity

how sniffiness

got selected for

and how being a finicky, persnickety eater

ever kept

their feline ancestors alive

how is staring off into space

at something only you can see

then freaking out and speeding away

like a missile

some kind of survival trait?

but then i consider

how completely mesmerized i get

by their bizarre activity

and regal pretense

and how they’ve somehow bent me to their

needs – – an underling

and i wonder if the world at large

responds the same way

it, too, can’t get over

these crazy, non-bright

flickering mammals

so it serves them

just like me
