Typewriter Rodeo: Valentine’s Day

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! It’s the day of love, chocolate, hearts, roses and all that. But for some, it can be about other ways to get that warm and fuzzy feeling without all the cliché.

Valentine’s Day

Sure,

I would happily accept

your heart full of chocolate

your bundle of rose buds

your bottle of wine

(preferably red, thanks)

But the truth is,

All I really need for Valentine’s Day

Is the time to check in

With all that brings me joy in this world

Love, of course

But also sweet friendships

And giggling babies

And those videos of dogs recognizing their

owners after being separated for years

And when things are supposed to be serious and

appropriate but then someone gets

the giggles and everyone falls apart laughing

Oh, and a perfect teacup

And a good twenty second hug

And that sneeze that hits at just the right time

and makes everything suddenly feel better

Just that.

Happy Valentine’s Day

And would you scootch over here for a hug?
