Typewriter Rodeo: What Was That Roadkill?

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

It was gone way before you got there, all that’s left are clues – and smells. That was the inspiration for this Typewriter Rodeo poem.

What Was That Roadkill?

the whiff you get

as you drive by is unmistakably

Texas

Texas on a hot day

Texas on a busy night

Texas gristle

Texas starry night

catastrophe

this whiff you get

as you drive by

was it rabbit

was it squirrel

was it deer

what in the world

could create this melange

this perfume of the damned

only Texas roads

speed limit
