The holiday seasons are fast approaching, and that means you may be eyeing a new big screen TV or new game system: an X-Box or maybe PlayStation, but what if there was something better? A more immersive experience that could make you feel like you were really there?

The technology may be just around the corner. It’s the world of virtual reality and developers are clamoring to figure out how best to utilize it. Talking a little bit about some of the advances is Omar Gallaga, the digital savant of the Austin American-Statesman.

Gallaga says that upcoming products have already become popular buzzwords for virtual reality: Oculus Rift, the Valve VR headset, Project Morpheus from Sony. These products, however, are not expected to be in the their final form until next year – at the least.

“All those are probably not going to hit store shelves until sometime in 2016,” Gallaga says. “We’re not seeing any release dates for any of these.”

In this segment you’ll learn:

– How Google Cardboard works and what experiences you can have

– Virtual reality’s introduction to the filmmaking industry

– How virtual reality is integrating a sensory experience to video games
