About ten years ago, it was very popular in media studies to talk about the connection gap. The wealthy had access to the web, and the poor not so much. These days, with the proliferation of handheld devices, plummeting costs, rising access and increasing digital dependency, the conversation has turned to something else: speed. Or to put it in the vernacular: “My internet isn’t fast enough.”
Such is the commodification of speed that those who can afford it often pick the faster option. And yet doesn’t it often seem that those blazing speeds promised by the carriers don’t feel as fired-up as one might expect.
