Last week in Wisconsin, hundreds of thousands of red skittles were found scattered across a highway. After some investigation, the source of the spill was determined to be a truck hauling the sweets to a farm for use in cattle feed.
Tryon Wickersham, professor at Texas A&M University, says that companies selling unorthodox and excess food products to farmers to mix into cattle feed is more common than many realize.
“You can think of cattle as the best up-cycler,” Wickersham says.
