Abilene, Texas received record-breaking downpours last week, which helped relax the drought-like conditions. However, it has created other problems.

Editor for the Abilene Reporter News, Doug Williamson, talked to the Standard about the uncommon wet weather Abilene experienced.

On the record breaking rainfall:

“On Tuesday we had eight-and-a-quarter inches of rain and that’s odd for Abilene, especially since we average a little bit less than 25 inches a year.”

On the water damage:

“We’ve been very lucky there has been very minimal flooding of homes, but obviously a lot of our streets just totally got flooded on on Tuesday. There was something like 40 or 50 fire rescues by the fire department from about 6:30 a.m. to noon.”

On the residents’ reactions:

“Out here in West Texas we just don’t complain about the rain, you know. When it rains, we’re happy for it.”
