Typewriter Rodeo: Come And Gone

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

Schools are empty and the Legislature is quiet – at least for another month. Temperatures are heating up across the state. All of this is to say that summer is finally here, the inspiration for this week’s poem.

Come and Gone

elbow room, elbow room

with the students gone

and the Lege out of session

we’ve finally got some

which is a good thing too

because the sweating times are here

all over

even on our elbows

how can it still be so hot

when all that hot air

just left town?

i guess it’s just the politicians

and academics

leaving us something

to remember them by

like empty buildings

full of ghosts

made of heat
