You can make the spa experience the centerpiece of a late-summer getaway, or just spend the day in luxury.

Most of us can’t afford to get away at the spa every weekend. But if you’re looking for a place to be pampered on a special occasion, we’re lucky to have several world-class destination spas in Texas. Here are a few in the Central part of the state.

Nestled in the corner of Mary Quinlan Park in Steiner Ranch on the west side of Austin, sits Lake Austin Spa. This upscale resort is perfect for the spa-goer who may want more than a treatment. Learn to pedalboard – like a stairmaster on the water. Or take a Tai Chi class or an aromatherapy workshop.

The nightly rate includes uber-comfy accommodations, classes and meals – which are delicious – though the portion sizes will remind you that you’re at a wellness spa. Alcoholic beverages and spa treatments are extra.

Enjoy morning yoga on the dock, a spin class overlooking the lake or a lunchtime boat cruise along Lake Austin.

Loma de Vida Spa at La Cantera Resort in San Antonio opened its doors last October after a few years of intense planning to create a destination spa fit for a Texas queen.

You’ll notice an emphasis on Himalayan pink salt, which is used an energizing detox along with smooth stones to knead away your sore muscles. Couples can reserve a personal cabana or a private sky loft. There’s also a grotto that can be booked for a small group.

But the real shining star at Loma de Vida is their solarium. You’ll find an “experience shower,” using the Himalayan salt scrub with water jets coming at you from all directions; then you can sit in the perfectly-heated “vitality pool” or detox in the dry sauna.

Treat yourself to a delicious dinner just down the road at Signature. Start with an appetizer of gold leaf risotto, seared foie gras, or a charcuterie plate made in-house.

I’ve never before seen a “citrus bar” brought around with water glasses to “make the water come alive.” And, there’s an equally impressive display of sweeteners and add-ons for your post-dinner coffee.

Another choice for spa relaxation is Hyatt Lost Pines, between Austin and Bastrop. Book a treatment like the Django massage which features just the right amount of deep tissue relaxation. You can continue your zen with a walk down by the Colorado River behind the spa. And, when you’ve had enough peace, head over to their Crooked River waterpark. The lazy river is relaxing, but with lots of kids around, you just have to be prepared for the occasional splashing. If you don’t choose to eat at the Hyatt Lost Pines, there are a myriad of great restaurants on Main Street in Bastrop. Try the fried seafood at Paw Paw’s Catfish for lunch and you can’t beat Maxine’s for a hearty brunch.

If you’re looking for a day spa option, try JW Marriott Austin. If you’re in a crunch for time, they even offer express treatments, lasting only 12 to 25 minutes. You’ll love this bustling downtown location where you can spend as little or as much time on your R&R as you like.
