Cellphone carriers have been promoting 5G networks for months. This fall, phones that support 5G are finally becoming available, including all of Apple’s new iPhone 12 models, along with phones from Samsung, OnePlus and LG. But knowing how and whether 5G is in your future is still a challenge for many, since the fast networks aren’t available in all areas, and since you’ll need a new phone to connect at top speeds.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga tells Texas Standard that being able to use a 5G network depends on whether your phone carrier offers it in your area, and whether your phone supports 5G. He says carriers offer coverage maps, and you can find a combined map at the Android Central website.

What you’ll hear in this segment:

– Whether you’ll need a new cellphone plan to use 5G

– How much you’ll pay for a 5G-compatible phone

– What 5G means for your phone’s battery life
