Seeing Texas History Through An Artistic Lens

San Antonio’s Witte Museum presents the exhibit “The Art of Texas: 250 Years” now through the summer.

Texas art and history converge this summer in San Antonio. A new exhibition opening this month at the Witte Museum explores Texas’ vast landscapes, people and cultures that have shaped the state as we know it today.

Amy Fulkerson is chief curator at the Witte Museum, and says the Witte was the first choice of several scholars who wanted to explore the history of Texas artists. Their exploration became the exhibition, “The Art of Texas: 250 Years.”

“It had been quite a while since anyone had tried to tackle a comprehensive look at what it means to be a Texas artist,” Fulkerson says.

Fulkerson says the exhibition isn’t a chronological tour of Texas history. Instead, it’s organized by topic.

“As you enter into the exhibition, you’re first routed into the landscape,” Fulkerson says. “What is it that is unique about this place that we now call Texas?”
