It’s time for the week that was in Texas politics with Alex Samuels, political reporter for The Texas Tribune.

Samuels says several candidates registered before Monday’s filing deadline to be on the ballot for Texas’ March primary elections. There are almost a dozen Democrats, and a few Republicans, running against Republican John Cornyn for his Senate seat.

Pierce Bush, grandson of President George H.W. Bush, is running for Texas’ 22nd Congressional district. He’s running against more than a dozen other Republicans.

Former White House physician Ronnie Jackson is running for Texas’ 13th Congressional District seat. He’s running against Mack Thornberry, and is up against at least 13 other Republicans, Samuels says.

In the presidential race, polls show that Vice President Joe Biden is the leading Democratic candidate in Texas. Next, is Bernie Sanders and then Elizabeth Warren.

“Biden netted about 35% of the vote among likely Texas Democratic primary voters,” Samuels says.

Texan candidate Julián Castro only earned 3% support in the polls.

“I think Castro’s still looking to shore up his name ID and fundraising, and of course, he missed the last debate and he’ll miss the next debate,” Samuels says. “He hasn’t had that national platform that these other candidates do.”
