Why air travel is such a pain right now

From crew shortages to pandemic-driven increases in travel demand, the air travel system is under stress.

Crowded conditions at many of the nation’s airports have resulted in multi-hour waits, as well as travelers abandoning rental cars in line so they can make their flight on time. It’s a rough time to fly. And with summer travel season about to start, it’s likely to get worse.

Omar Gallaga recently looked into what’s causing all the airport headaches for Wired. He told Texas Standard the logjams could continue for some time.

Highlights from this segment:

– A number of forces, including pent-up demand for air travel, airline staff shortages and pilot retirements, are among the reasons the travel system is strained.

– Though high fuel prices have increased the cost of air travel, many are choosing to fly anyway, or traveling domestically instead of taking a trip abroad.

– To be ready for crowds at the airport, arrive early, be patient and have something to read or entertain yourself while you wait.
