Police can once again request Ring video footage

Amazon had paused the program for more than a year amid criticism from privacy advocates.

Amazon is partnering with two companies to relaunch a program allowing police agencies to request video footage from Ring security systems.

The company removed the feature from its Ring products in early 2024, after years of criticism from privacy advocates and others about how the footage could be used and who it could inadvertently capture.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga says privacy experts remain concerned about the ways footage could be used without the consent of those pictured.

Highlights from this segment:

– Amazon was first criticized in 2018 for allowing Ring footage to be provided to law enforcement who requested it, sometimes without the user’s knowledge.

– Amazon will work with Flock Safety and Axon, two companies that do work for law enforcement agencies.

– The company says Ring owners will be asked for permission to use their video.
