Lawmakers this session have their sights set on overhauling the state’s school finance system. This means figuring out how to give Texans property tax relief and maintain the teacher retirement system. But, they’re also looking at ways to improve safety and oversight at child care facilities after an Austin American-Statesman investigation into reports of deaths and sexual abuse suffered by children at child care operations across the state.
Last week Robert Sanborn, president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit Children at Risk, told reporters and lawmakers that “only 11 percent of the 15,000 child care providers in Texas are certified as meeting quality standards.”
Is that a fact? Madlin Mekelburg of the Politifact Texas’ team has the answer.
Hear how Robert Sanborn’s claim scored in the player above.
