Democrat Beto O’Rourke of El Paso says the U.S. government has no clue when visa holders leave the United States and enter Mexico, on foot or by vehicle. Is that a fact?
Gardner Selby of the PolitiFact Texas fact-checking team has the answer. Selby says the former congressman — who may run for president — posted on the blogging website Medium earlier this month that the government should better track visa holders, thus “fully harmonizing our entry-exit systems with Mexico and Canada.” O’Rourke claimed that when visa holders leave the U.S. and enter Mexico through a land port of entry, there’s no way for officials to know that those people aren’t in the U.S. anymore, or if they’ve returned to their country of origin.
Hear how O’Rourke’s claim scored in the player above.
