Calls For Help ‘Are Through The Roof.’ DFW Women’s Shelters Struggle During Pandemic

Workers who answer shelter hotlines are fielding more calls, and the reduced number of staff and volunteers working within the shelters has left those that remain stretched thin.

At a battered women’s shelter in North Texas, calls and requests for help are through the roof. Other shelters report they are out of space. Most are out of cleaning supplies. And all of them need food and money, right now. Many shelter workers are worried about the connection between the pandemic and a rise in domestic violence.
