A bit of Texas history may soon be revealed along the Gulf Coast.

Back when Texas was a republic, it had its own Navy – complete with a fleet of ships. One of the most impressive of these was the Zavala,  named after the Republic’s first vice-president.

The story goes that the ship was only in use for a few years when it fell into disuse. So, it was run aground and left to rot.

Today, the expansion of the port cruise terminal in Galveston may unearth the Zavala. Michael Tuttle is a marine archaeologist working to find the ship. He joins the Standard to talk about his search.
