Matthew McCutchin is a lecturer at the Stan Richards School of Advertising at the University of Texas at Austin. He came up with a top five list of most ‘iconic’ brands from Texas:

5. Southwest Airlines

“That’s a very good example of a brand that started off as a Texas brand and felt very much Texas,” McCutchin says.

4. Pace Picante Sauce

“It may have fallen off of the radar in recent years. I don’t know that it’s getting the advertising dollars that it used to get in the 80s, 90s or even early 2000s but they always played on the Texan-ess.” McCutchin says.

3. Dell

“It’s a global brand and it’s a powerful brand but it’s still a Texas company through and through,” McCutchin says.

2. Dr. Pepper

“Roots go deep with that brand,” McCutchin says.

1. Shiner Bock Beer

“That has been very carefully nurtured over the years to take it from a regional brewery to a serious national player,” McCutchin says. “It still feels like it is still very much a small-town, authentic beer.”
