News broke this week that a hacker stole information belonging to 100 million people from Capitol One databases. It’s just the latest in a rash of data thefts. In 2017, 143 million Americans had their data stolen – social security numbers, drivers’ license information, credit card numbers – in the Equuifax breech, the largest breech in U.S. history.
Under a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, consumers are able to receive compensation for their losses. Though, with a difficult claims process and swarming Internet scammers, clients should be careful about releasing more information. Tech expert Omar Gallaga says consumers can apply for compensation at the FTC website.
