Veronica Escobar, a Democratic member of Congress from El Paso, says President Donald Trump has exploded the national debt by more than $3 trillion in order to provide tax cuts to the wealthy.
Is that a fact? Madlin Mekelburg of the PolitiFact Texas fact-checking team has the answer.
Escobar delivered the Democrats’ Spanish-language response to Trump’s State of the Union address last week. In it, she accused Trump of dramatically increasing the debt to support tax cuts that Trump touted during his speech. The tax cuts in question were passed by Congress in 2017, and were Trump’s first major legislative victory.
