Discord, a popular platform for text, voice and video chat, will roll out age verification for its users next month. The app is responding to age verification requirements put in place by states, including Texas, and countries around the world.
Tech expert Omar Gallaga says the rules are aimed at keeping minors away from certain kinds of content, but Discord is getting backlash from some users over privacy concerns.
Highlights from this segment:
– The initial announcement that Discord would add age verification requirements alarmed many current users. A later clarification from the company says that many current users will not have to verify their age.
– Discord users will be treated as teens – blocked from certain adult content, and speaking on stage within the app – if they do not verify their age.
– Discord age verification will use facial recognition and AI to infer a person’s age, or you can scan a government ID to prove.
