It’s time for the week that was in Texas politics with Alex Samuels political reporter for The Texas Tribune.

President Donald Trump visited West Texas this week, holding a high-dollar fundraiser for his reelection campaign, and giving a speech before oil and gas workers in the Permian Basin.

“While the president was there, he announced a [contract] extension for liquefied natural gas exporters through the year 2050,” Samuels said.

He also announced permits for construction of new rail and pipeline infrastructure along the border.

The president’s campaign fundraiser was expected to raise $7 million.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott extended the early voting period for the November general election by six days, citing continuing concerns about COVID-19. Early voting is Oct. 13-30. Election Day is Nov. 3.

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Tyler Republican, tested positive for the coronavirus. Gohmert has often spoken out against requirements to wear masks, and has been seen without a face covering at the U.S. Capitol as recently as this week.

“He was actually slated to travel with the president to Midland and Odessa on Wednesday, but he tested positive during a White House prescreen,” Samuels said.

Gohmert said he is asymptomatic, and that he will self-quarantine at his East Texas home.

Wearing face masks is now mandatory on the floor of the U.S. House, per an order from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
