Facebook is facing scrutiny from lawmakers, journalists and advocates for children – again. Last week, The Wall Street Journal published an investigation that revealed internal Facebook research about the impact of Instagram on young people. The study suggests that use of the photo-sharing service, which is owned by Facebook, harms teens, especially girls.

Tech expert Omar Gallaga told Texas Standard that lawmakers have questions. A Senate committee is grilling company officials on Thursday.

Highlights from this segment:

– The Journal investigation relied on a whistleblower who shared internal Facebook documents describing research that showed negative impacts of Instagram on teens, especially teen girls.

– In the wake of criticism this week, the company has paused its plan for Instagram Kids, a version of the platform for children under 13.

– Lawmakers will ask Facebook leaders about the research findings. Next week, they will hear from the person who leaked the information to the Journal.
